I am currently looking at alternative bridge foundations for temporary bridge applications. The bridge span will range from 6-12 m with loading for off highway vehicles with a GVW 100 Ton or 90,680 kg. It has been suggested that a single row of wire mesh gabions might be an option. The bridge would bear on a timber sill to help distribute the weight. Upon contacting my supplier I was informed that the use of gabions as abutments was not recommended as they may fail under load. I have found other reference that say it is a viable alternative. I am looking for information on the use of gabions as abutments, are they prone to failure?
Are there situations where they could be used (load range)?
Is there design information for this type of application?
