In the UBC, ag buildings had an exception. They could be designed for dead + live only. Wind could be ignored.

Is there any such exception in the IBC 2006 or CBC 2007?

I'm not seen such an exception.

UBC; 1624, "Greenhouses, lath houses, agricultural buildings or fences 12 feet or less in height shall be designed in accordance with Chapter 16, Division III. However, three fourths of qs, but not less that 10 psf, may be substituted for qs in Formula (20-1)...."
You still have to design for some wind. I don't think IBC has an equivalent paragraph.

Jed Clampett,

I know about the wind reduction. There is another section in the UBC which allows for the buildings to be designed for just D + L.

In this area of California, there are many shade covers and storage building, hay barns, etc, which have stood for 50-60 years- including some large quakes.

Justifying those same member sizes today is a job.
