Hi All,

When calculating wind induced dynamic acceleration of a mid-rise building is it correct to ignore the effect of gravity loads as they are static and only consider wind load with serviceability load factors.

Thanks.

The floor mass will be important when calculating a wind induced accelartion. Most people consider either a 5 or 10 yr return period for wind accelerations and peoples response to the motions.

Thanks asixth,

Sorry,I should have been more clear and specific. I'm trying to calculate peak along wind acceleration using Davenport formulation; the formulation requires maximum wind induced deflection at the top of the building. My question is what force or combination of forces should be used when calculating this parameter.

lets assume the building is designed according to Euro-code and all force are calculated using euro-code guide line.

If 5/10 year return period wind pressure is to be used is it correct to apply the wind force un-factored to calculate the above deflection?

Considering that the building is designed according to Euro-code should the wind force be reduced using load combination factor given for reversible serviceability in Eurocode (1.1 Dead Load + 1.0 Imposed load + 0.3 Wind load) to calculate the deflection?

Thank you.

For calculating accelerations the dead and live load shouldn't contribute and 5/10yr wind. Not too sure about cross and along wind response for ultimate forces design but I assume the load combinations would apply with the ultimate wind being 500yr or 1.5 x 50yr. It's been a while since I've gone through the calcs. Normally don't consider it until the translational periods are above 1 sec.
