Can anyone tell me about any difference between 1m width sand backfilling behind the basement wall or 2m sand behind the same wall. what i mean is in term of earth lateral pressure. please note that there is no provision of subsoil pipe at the toe of the wall.

The difference in pressure between using 1m and 2m of sand backfill will depend on the hieght of the wall and what the other backfill and/or natural materials are.

As for there being no drain at the toe of the wall, the wall should therefore be designed for full hydrostatic head. I've never seen that cheaper than providing for drainage.

I dont see the point in not providing drainage - if you are going to place 1 or 2 m of backfill why not throw a perforated drain pipe down there while your at it.

Granular backfill can clog up with silt so may not act as a reliable drain path by itself.

If the soil failure wedge is entirely within the granualar backfill then I would think you would be justified in using the lateral coefficient of the granular backfill, if not then it will be some combination of the 2.
