Humans enjoy rare and shiny things. If an item has both characteristics,
we enjoy it doubly. And we want to give these precious things to ones
we love so they can see that we equate this preciousness with their
love, that both things are to be revered and prized. They wear wedding
jewelry as a symbol, which originally meant a promise (hence the term
promise ring). Today there are plenty of other ways to interpret womens
diamond rings, as ornamentation, as a prize, as a status symbol, etc.
