Is NDT necessary for all relief valves in oil gas application? Why is it only done for relief valves?

How do you decide which NDT method should be used?

In the spec it says ‘ultrasonic examination (UT) as an alternative to radiography for forgings will be accepted for Classes 300 and above’, does it mean for class 150, ONLY radiography testing should be done?

A supplier offered liquid penetrant examination, is it acceptable?
Thanks..

it depends on the material you are talking about. Some meathods of NDT are better for certain materials. Forms of NDT could be charpy impact testing, radiograph, Liquid Pen, mag particle. It depends what material, what part and where the material is sourced, also what QC procedures a manufacture uses help determines if/when it is best to spend extra money on NDT

EngCutie,

Radiography(RT)is used to look for defects in the casting or forging material. UT would be nessecary when the component thickness is increasedbeyond where RT becomes impracticle.
