What should a structural steel designer know about dust cyclones 1

I am occassionally involved in design of structural frameworks for cement factories and I am now familiar with fans, filters, mills, etc.

Sufficient data is usually available in the form of loads and placement. There is lesser data supplied with respect to limits for vibration,displacement, allowance for temperature as I would expect.

One heavy item I come across is the Cyclone system. Really heavy and usually having to be supported at high elevations. Poses a serious problem in seismic zones.

Starting with this item I would appreciate any ancyclopaedic info on what cyclone do and what care should be practiced in supporting it.

I believe the more I learn the more I can press the manufacturers to provide more data for safer design

design your cyclone for the volume of material you going
introduce in the cyclone and the velocity you need to carry
the material. Ther are many forms of support for siesmec design one that i have used is the hss shapes found in the
AISC. i can help you if you send me the data on what your
material you are transporting. Cyclones act like what they
are called they seperate the air from the soilds or dust
and the air is dischargeed trough a inner tube at a specific
fpm. This in return cause the material to fall. This a simple discription.

Sooner or later I will be again involved in supporting 100ton cyclones and I will be back in touch.

I have got involved in design of cement factories-steel structure of course- no pipework, no mills, no fans, no filters. Mechanical (cement) engineers usually provide all the necessary info on how main components should be supported, but there is no harm understanding the basics, because there are some cases when we have clients who specify very little.

A couple of months ago, I had a heard time looking for information on hot-gas-generator supports-one of the most important component in a cement factory. Apart from the specified 1200ton(and that is serious), there was no information on how much displacement can be tolerated etc.
