I am under the impression that the two are different and are for different applications but when looking at the valves they apear to do the same thing unless I'm missing something?

A diverter valve is mostly a y-type valve used for conveying systems.
A t-port is mostly used in smaller proceslines where flowresistance is not really an issue.
