Can you give me the definition of the word RETAINERS according code ASME IX
What are the difference between the word RETAINERS with the word BACKING

Retainers as used in Section IX are designed to hold metal metal are not part of the weld nor fuse with the weld deposit.

Backing is where welding is performed against either existing weld metal or a fusible material.
