I am currently facing a situation where I will have to weld tested pipe into pipeline that has just been tested. all the piping has been tested. The pipeline falls under CSA guidelines. I can find a code reference for closure welds that refers me to ASME s.8 d.1 I will mag the hot pass and cap with hardness test. Is this acceptable under CSA guidelines.

So here you have the scenario of a pressure containing weld that has not been pressure tested in place. Clause 7.10.3.1 requires mandatory inspection of this. You would then look at 7.10.4.1 NDT Methods, and you must select a method that would be capable of detecting any defect from the welding process. I would never use MPI as there are limitations on what you can see (i.e internally in the weld). All the "tie-in" welds I would use RT or UT. CSA does not have any guidleines in the code for inspecting welds using MPI, only for RT and UT.

It is unfortunate that CSA (Z662-11), in their wisdom did not actually specify/state that UT, PA or RT are the only mehtods that can effectively resolve questions regarding the integrity of a closure weld such as what is described. Those are the only methods that are field practical that will allow full inspection of said weldment bead to cap. This may seem obvious to those of us on this side of the pond...but for someone with less ability in English...can and I'm sure causes some questioning and confusion. Codes are bad enough at times to read. In experience this is even more so with Z662, and W59.
