How can I calculate the minimum spur gear thickness in the area away from the teeth? This gear is loaded on center with the gear. I would like to thin down the gear leaving a thicker web for teeth.

Dp=20
Teeth number = 19/102 (.95/5.1" dia.)
Possibly 1055 heat treated material
.8 hp @ 7000 rpm., pinion drives gear
Life - 250 hours

I can run an FEA static or buckling analysis if this helps.

I should have posted that the pinion and gear face widths would be .34"

At 1304 rpm output speed I would not worry so much with thinning the web but with balancing the whole setup, but if you want to lighten the gear I would go the way of cutting holes instead of thinning it to less than 0.25"

You could get probably 6 holes 3/4" max diameter, 8 maybe will get you minimun weight but a little stress analisis would be good but with 6 you are on the safe side.

Cheers
