zdr1985 is right, the thickness got nothing to do with it(is behind the comma).

NS is the industry convention for naming pipe. Six inch nominal size pipe corresponds to pipe with an approximate inner diameter of six inches. The actual inner diameter varies based on the wall thickness of the pipe.

The nominal size and thickness both in inches should be enough, why mix up with redundant dimensions with mm if using English units?

I think I may have seen some standards use the abbreviation"NS" for nominal size; however, it's probably best in general to not use abbreviations or acronyms that are not defined in the document, or well known. Notice the discussion by the "
