NS is the industry convention for naming pipe. Six inch nominal size pipe corresponds to pipe with an approximate inner diameter of six inches. The actual inner diameter varies based on the wall thickness of the pipe.
When referring to pipe I am actually more accustomed to seeing NPS for Nominal Pipe Size, but given the material description above, it's obvious the author does mean nominal size.
