Welding on fuel storage 1

We have two 100,000 gallon diesel storage tanks that DNR says must be anchored down. Our engineering firm has designed the anchors and it requires welding on the tanks near the bottom. The tanks have a 1/4" wall thickness and approximately 30' of fuel. I have welded natural gas lines hot (tapping tee's) is there anything special I should know here?

I asssume that these are welded tanks not old rivited tanks and that they are unlined (not coated with fiberglass, etc. inside. The diesel will wick the heat away fairly fast, you will probally need slightly more heat to accomplish welding this. Leave a 1/4" hole in the plate that the you are attaching for moisture removal, do this by either welding completely around and leaving a 1/4" gap in the weld or by drilling a 1/4" hole in the plate prior to welding.
