Hello All,

According to B31.1, Table A-3, General Note (1) allowable stress values tabulated for temperatures over 1,000°F apply only if the carbon content of the material is 0.04% or higher.
Is this note also applicable for welding material?
Can I use ER316L for welding SA312-TP316 for temperature over 1000°F?

Thanks,

Not (100%) sure about this question for B31.1, but for a B31.3 perspective, I think the answer - from a Code perspective - would be yes.

However, I would consider a WPS for such an application having that filler metal selection not be appropriate. I would go for e.g. ER 16-8-2 or similar filler metals.
For SS316 (or SS304) above 1000F, you essentially require 316H (or 304H). I would be surprised if you can find an MTR with C > 0.04 and not stating it is the H-grade.

I think the best entry into B31.1 for this subject would be 127.2.1(c).
