Hi everyone,
i put my case in front of welding professionals.
suppose i have a pipe 6"x15.88, APIL 5L X60.
i want welding procedure qualification for 6"x8mm.

my question is, can i reduce the thickness of 6"x15.88 to 8mm by machining till up to HAZ or little more, just to qualify for 6"x8mm because qualification of 6x15.88, i am not getting the thickness of 8mm in thickness range as per API 1104.

if it is allowed, which clause and code exactly allows the machining of high thickness to low thickness to cover or qualify for low thickness range

Thanks in adnavce.

Hi,

I understand that you are qualifying according to ASME s.IX?
Is impact strength required? If not, the qualification range will be 5-31.76mm.

If impact strength is required, then you actually need a thinner coupon.

I did exactly the same on a PED project and neither the notified body nor the customer had any concerns about it.
