A butt joint is a joint between members that are in line with each other (eg a pipe to a pipe) and a T joint is for instance a branch weld (e.g nozzle on a vessel)
The text you refer to could mean that if you are qualified to weld a butt joint you are not qualified to de a branch weld and visa versa.
