Can A193 Grade B7 anchor bolts be welded? They are tempered, so I believe they would lose some mechanical properties. Is there any acceptable weld method that could be used?

Thanks

You can't weld high strength bolts. When you re-heat steel that has been previously heat treated, you get unpredictable results and can't really be sure what you'll end up with. You can lose your heat treatment benefits, and can get unexpected internal stresses.

If you need a reference:

I'd add its unacceptable to do the welding but design it for the lower strength and think it will be ok. I've seen people tempted to do this, but it isn't a valid assumption as THLS alludes to, there is more to it at a microscopic level in the metallurgy.

You can in some markets get threaded couplers if your aim is to simply extend rods that might be too short.

Do not weld B7. People get hurt doing this...

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand
