I have been tasked to write a welding procedure for 904L CRES. I have no experience with this grade. Does anyone know a Milspec or ASTM that this grade is manufactured to? My particular questions are welding parameters such as, preheat, filler, PWHT requirements.

What are you joining to? It self?
904L welds like any high alloy stainless.
Filler, I think that NiCrMo3 (385?) is a slightly over alloyed filler for this.
There are ASTM specs, B674 is a tubing spec. I don't recal the sheet/plate specs.

Corrosion, every where, all the time.
Manage it or it will manage you.

In addition, the Nickel Development Institute has a web site below that contains a free technical paper titled;
"Guidelines for the welded fabrication of nickel-containing stainless steels for corrosion resistant service"

The paper above provides an excellent guidelines for welding of stainless steels including background information, welding processes, cleaning, weld joint design, suggested filler metal, etc.

Thank you for the valuable info. It has given me a direction to start my research.
