Does anyone have an idea of how long it would take to tig weld 304 stainless steel 1/4" thick. Im looking for a unit of time per length of weld.

What shape base metal?

What conditions?

Shop work bench at 70 degrees with a break every 1/2 hour?

Overhead lying on your back under a (still-hot) boiler pipe working on a pipe in he middle of rack 150 feet above the floor? Inside a tank wearing ten tons of PPE and breathing a respirator using a backwards mirror through a handhole? 8<)

I've seen cases where the weld took 5 minutes, but the access and prep and machine staging and gas supplies and hot work permit and security briefing and safety badging and pre-job brief and shift turnover and getting Argon bottles to the right level with the right scaffolding ......

General productivity, flat position, no obstructions...3 to 5 inches per minute

A method mentioned elsewhere in this forum, was to get a piece of plate prepared and tack welded.
Mark on it a specific distance. Then call a welder into your office, give him the plate, tell him to weld it right away and bring it back to you as soon as he had welded it to the marks.
In the meantime you whip your stop watch out and start timing.

Thanks for the replies, it's normal shop conditions welding straight lines.

Assuming a full penetration weld from one side, multiple (3 to 4) weld passes will be required to complete the joint.
