Hi!

I'm checking a weld of a Square Hollow Section running between two deck stringers (see sketch). The SHS is welded to the deck plate and to the deck stringers. At the base plate there is a vertical load and a lateral loads which also gives a torsional moment Mx in the SHS. When checking the stresses in the welds towards the stringers I will check it for the vertical load and the lateral load, but should I also check it for all of Mx? And if so what torsional resistance should I use: As shown in the sketch as an open profile (thin wall) or as a closed profile (assuming the shear flow will go through the weld and the deck plate)?

The "U" shaped weld would have to be checked for both F forces and the moment together.
I'm not sure if the deck plate participates - depends on how the weld, tubes and deck plate are connected.

Just using the "U" would be conservative.
