Can anyone give me a good resource for calculating water main ?
A sample calculation will do.

If you are trying to size the main for flow an old rule of thumb is that flow (gpm) = [diameter(inches)]^2 *10. This usually results in a velocity between 4 to 5 ft/sec.

BUT, if the line is looped or part of a larger gridded system or there are unusual flows such as fire or other high demands this is a gross oversimplification.

The line is looped and requires use of some hardy-cross calculations.

I have a document on the method and would like to see how it has been applied to size water mains.

If you wish to model this system you can get EPANET free from the US Environmental Protection Agency. There are also many commercial programs available but some are quite expensive. Doing these calculations by hand or with a spreadsheet is also possible but not practical for a system of more than a few pipes.

Another good reference is Analysis of Flow in Pipe Networks by Roland W. Jeppson, Ann Arbor Science Library.

If you're not familiar with these methods get a little help from some colleague who is. It will save you lots of time and aggravation.
