Vibration Damping on Old Percussion Drill

Hello there,

I have an old hydraulic percussion drill that I use to drill 25mm holes into rock.

Due to the percussive nature of the drill, there are extreme vibrational forces at the handle (in all directions).

I would like to retrofit the handle with some sort of damping without losing the capability of applying a force to advance the drill forward.

I have thought of using some spring damping, however I may prefer using rubber or a plastic to provide damping and transmit the force.

Do you have any suggestions for me to do this? I have access to a fully equipped machine shop.

Mike is on the right track, a bag of cement on the handle will perform wonders.

A big bag of concrete would help, except the drill already weights 20kg!

The forward and backwards motion of the drill is occurring at about 196m/s2!

At 20 kg, this is a lite weight version of the 50kg hand held drills we regularily use in hard rock mining to drill 32 mm holes. Do some research on Secan drills, set up for shaft sinking. Regular 1 or 1.25 inch rubber hose, in 6 inch lengths are fixed onto the handles. These provide the primary protection from vibration induced muscular damage. Good gloves provide additional vibration protection .

Im assuming you are drilling vertical holes. If you are drilling horizontally, check out air legs

You might look at the vibration isolation techniques used on hydraulic paving breakers. Sprung handles and rubber handle covers. It will be a compromise between isolation and sufficient stiffness to be able to push to maintain a feed force.

Frequencies range 1000 to 2000 cycles per minute.

Thanks, yes I am looking at a spring mount for the handle. I just need to work out how to design the spring correctly..

Rubber handles as mentioned above and a good pair of thick leather gloves should help.
