Hi there,

In my bachelor thesis, I am investigating the effects of vibration on the lifespan of induction motors. For this purpose, electric motors from various areas of application are to be ordered first. One of them is used in a vertical circular pump with 15kW, 400V line feed. I compared the catalogs of the big manufacturers like Grundfos, WILO and KSB. I asked myself whether these companies also manufacture the motors for their pumps themselves or are they produced by other manufacturers.
Furthermore I tried to define the current parameters for this application, if someone has an idea about that topic, it would be nice to take a look over there.
• 15 kW, 50 Hz, 400 V three-phase current, line feed (IEC 60038)
• 2 poles, 3000 rpm approx.
• Housing size 160M (IEC 60072-1)
• Efficiency IE3 (IEC 60034-30-1)
• Mounting: Flange mounted IM3011, IMV1 (IEC 60034-7)
• Insulation class 155 (F) (IEC 60085)
• Ingress protection class: IP55 (IEC 60529)
• Cooling: self-ventilating (IC 411), TECF (IEC 60034-6)
• Housing material: cast iron
• Starting method: Direct on line

Contact a few pump companies, they might answer your pump 101 question/s

Thank you for your answer, I know that student post are not much appreciated. But in other student forums I did not get good replies. I basically just want to know from where the pump manufactures get the motor. I already called them and they told me that they are producing the motor by themselves. But I can not really believe that. I think at least some pump manufactures do get the motor from outside, where the motor gets produced to their enquiry and put their name on the motor. I already got to know that in many other sectors it works like that.

They are normally outsourced (WEG,SIEMENS,ABB,ANSALDO,etc.). At this power level, it's off the shelf especially for H/or V basic mono or multi stage pump. There are some scenarios involving magnetic couplings or submersible motors for example, where things might differ a bit. Some (large) pumps manufacturers have electric motor manufacturers under same umbrella/ conglomerate (GE for example). Its an exception but even then, they may outsource to stay overall competitive.

Your parameters look ok to me.

As said above, at this power level the pump vendor just pick the cheapest motor to do the duty, normally from an external motor supplier as listed.

Pump vibrations are supposed to be limited to certain levels. That won't be an easy number to come up with.

Intersting project, but you might have to run them for a looooong time before vibration at any sort of level likely to be experienced will cause failure.

Excess vibration will likely cause the pump seals to fail first before the motor.

What are you trying to find / are looking for??

Motor manufacturers should have a good handle on this already?
