Using a 4x4 as a winch anchor for a lifting rig

Hi, can anyone help with this query?

Looking to use a 4x4 as an alternative to a ground anchor such as a platypus. The 4x4 will be the anchor point for the winch as part of a lifting rig.

Assuming flat ground conditions how would I calculate the load capacity of the ground anchor (I.e the 4x4).

[smile] Perhaps this attachement will help? Only focussing on the horizontal pull, but may need to consider a 10degree gradient.

Presumably load capacity is dependant on weight and ground friction but how to i calculate this, do I need to consider wheel base and load distribution on the wheels?
How does it differ with a 4x4 to front/rear wheel drive?

Anyone know anything about this? Or is it unbelievably simple and just a case of weightxfriction on a flat surface, and something equally as simple for the incline? Sorry if i'm being incredibly dim.

Hook the winch to a sufficiently heavy truck and the keep the keys in you pocket. What are the soil conditions and compaction around the post hole, the strength and length of the 4x4, the force with which the winch can pull; some of the variables needed to even begin to address your question. Stay out from under the load.

I'm talking about lifting antenna for rigging to radio towers, so site ground conditions vary. But presuming best case scenario for now and i have a tarmac or concrete with decent friction will be a good start. The winch will be chosen to suit the load the 4x4 can lift.
 
Friction against ground, winch connection to 4x4, weight of 4x4...the lesser of those will control right?
 
1) how does the truck react the in-plane load ? friction to the ground

2) how does the truck react out-of-plane load ? weight on the front axle

it sounds like you're erecting these antenna by pivoting them about their base ? how much axial compression can these antenna react ?
