usage of ubolts 1

Hi friends
this question seems funny but i'm a junior engineer no one around me could answer me,
when we use ubolts as a rest supp, we put sth e.g. an angle bellow it,can we attach a horizontal pipe to a vertical beam beside it with u bolt as a rest,i'm talking on pipes 2" and above,esp. 2".based on books,the answer is yes,but people avoid doing that why?

For 2" and below, maybe yes. UBolts are really not very strong. Nothing is really very strong if thermal loads come into play, even on a 2" pipe, so UBolts must be used carefully and with thought. The UBolts should not actually contact the pipe, or they will become guides, they should only retain the pipe in case of some instability, such as light wind loads, etc. They really won't be good for much else.

We will design everything from now on using only S.I. units ... except for the pipe diameter. Unk. British engineer

A better way to explain this just occured to me.

"U-bolts are used when the pipe isn't heavy enough to hold itself down." ... or "up" as the case may be.

We will design everything from now on using only S.I. units ... except for the pipe diameter. Unk. British engineer
