For those that don't have access to the Solid Edge newsgroup, this it what has currently been revealed about upcoming changes in ST3.

Enhanced Assembly Configurations
Enhanced 3D Measurement
Drafting:
Continued enhancements to Parts List
Support for mixed languages in drawings (unicode)
Retrieve Dimensions from Assembly
Assign item numbers in assembly to be used in drawing balloons
Support multiple drawings on single plotter sheet
Sheet Metal:
New Closed Corner Types - U-shaped, V-shaped, Circular offset.
Etching - Sketches and Text on faces survive flattening
Ability to add tabs to flattened sheet metal model
For mfg purposes - not shown in design model
Report complement angle of bend angle in bend table
Export flatten sheet metal model with PMI to JT
Pipe/Frame Design:
Several highly requested enhancements

Regarding the GUI:
Yes, we have a huge effort in this domain for ST3, concentrated on the two major issues affecting most users:

1. Command bar and Pathfinder space contention.
2. Fully customizable Ribbon Tabs.

... and that's all? For it's still in the works it can be
declared as 'Vapourware' ;-)

"Fully Customisable Ribbon tabs" - does that mean we can make it work look and work like V20?
I'm still having trouble getting used to this ribbon interface.

That looks a bit more flexible, at least I'd be able to put the dimensioning tools with the drawing tools in draft environment!

BC,

you are still with ST1, arn't you? In St2 the drawing tools as well as
the dimensioning tools are now reunited ;-) under the Sketching
tab

Thanks Don,
Yes, we are stuck with ST1 for the moment because another company we are working with do not want to go to ST2 yet. They are waiting to ensure that other stuff is compatible.
I don't know what the other stuff is exactly, but they use ANSYS and that was mentioned when I asked why not upgrade.

Hi Raaden,

You might want to check with the author if you can post that here. The Canons of Conduct for the Siemens PLM Forum do not allow information to be re-posted without the author's approval.

BC,

the information I have is that the interface of Ansys12.1
should work with ST1 and ST2. Older versions of Ansys do
work with V20 and lower only.

Oh, I didn't know that Mark, I think I've gotten so used to how information is shared and spread on the World of Warcraft forums that I didn't even reflect on that Siemens PLM maybe didn't want to spread that information.

Is there a way for me to remove my original post?

Oh, I don't think its a big deal or I would have clicked the "inappropriate post" button or called the lawyers ;-) (joking).

In theory, people can be more open on the Siemens PLM forums since the information is protected. In practice, this is getting increasingly harder to do in today's world of Facebook and Twitter.

Yes, information has gotten wings and I think most of us love that.

I know that many people here don't have access to the Siemens PLM forum, but they still have strong opinions about ST, the new GUI etc. So if you or Dan feel that you can share some nuggets in the PLM forum about upcoming changes it would be really nice i you cross-posted that here, especially if it concerns changes to the GUI ;-)

You're correct there Raaden, I'm one of those people.
I work as a contractor so don't get access to the web-keys and log-in details for GTAC.
I would love to be able to contribute but it's just not possible. I asked a local VAR about getting my own access because I was a regular user (but not owner) but they wouldn't do it.
As a user since V3 I have seen most of the development of SE.

Beachcomber,

I think you will see more people "going where the customer is" due to the social media craze. It should get better for you.

In my case I'm super accessible and hang out here, on twitter, on Facebook, on the Siemens Forums and on Google Wave. I can even use email and a phone :) Maybe that is a sign of things to come for other areas.

Unfortunately (for now), my sphere of influence is Solid Edge Simulation and not the domain you are interested in.

Beachcomber,
I will check into this and see for sure but I think all you need is the sold to number and you can get a password to log on.
I see this issue raised in other places so maybe the rules need to change if indeed it is impossible to do this. I am not happy with how hard it is to get access and information and tutorials from Siemens and I know others are not happy either. Siemens is starting to pay a lot more attention to what actual users want and as far as I can see they are serious about this so now is a good time to raise these issues with them and your VAR if they are worth a flip.

Yes, many people could learn alot from you. You are everywere.
I don't know when you actually have time to work with SE Simulation, but I'm guessing you do most of it through Second Life :)

For those who claim they cannot get access to the Siemens hosted newsgroups, all that is needed to get a Webkey account is your server ID and Web Access Code, both can be found in the Help About Solid Edge form. Of course, having your maintenance paid up also helps.

OK Pellaken, but some employers are not too keen on contractors and temps using this information - especially after they have left the company!!

The concern expressed here was not being able to get on the forum. This issue was raised at the forum and the answer is yes you can get on. It is limited to legitimate users however as it keeps the troll count down. I would be certain that if you are on good terms with the company you contract to that once they understand that it's not like you will be privy to corporate secrets or have a "free" seat of SE they would allow you to log on. You have been invited.

Thanks, hope to be on soon.
