I have created a part within an assembly, using the assembly as reference to constrain my part. I now want to unlink this part from the assembly so I can use it in other assemblies. How do oyu do this?

If the part is only 'constrained' in the assembly there are no external
references or 'links' to the assembly.

External references that have been created can be redefined or rerouted.

A part with external references can be placed in other assemblies.

Do you want to use the Same Part or create a new, independent part definition?

The part was created in the assembly, and uses the assembly for its references. In other words, when making the first sketch for the part (Sketch1), it was done within the assembly. So the references for this sketch were datum planes and surfaces from the assembly. When I opn this created part and try to redefine the references in Sketch1, there is nothing else available to select as references. I can create part datum planes, but they have to be inserted after the first sketch, so they do no good. I cannot create datum planes before the fisrt sketch in the model tree. I would like to create a new, independent part definition.

feltmounce,

Did you start your part completely empty??

I take it Sketch 1 is 1st feature? Bad move, huh?

Try creating datum planes after Sketch1 and dragging them up.

It may be (we're being pretty general here; no idea how complicated
this part is) you can place your new (with default datums) part in
the existing assembly (constrain it to the assembly; 'constrain' means
"assembly constraints") somewhere near your existing part, activate it,
Copy / Paste Special your existing part features into the new part.
Use the Advance Reference collector. If you can successfully reroute
all the feature references, save the part, delete from the assy.

It may be best to simply start over.
