Underwater Laser collision avoidance

Hi,
Im trying to come up with a way to avoid collisions underwater, without using sonar. I thought of using four lasers to map the walls of the container and then knowing my initial position, be able to avoid crashing.

However I dont really have a large knowledge of lasers and any advice/thoughts on the topic would be very useful.
i.e. is this a viable idea, and how would i go about it?
or any other alternative?

Oh and i only have a small budget < £200.

what about measuring the water's resistance between two
probes on the moving part as far apart as possible ?
I would use AC.

you will need to use a green source. if you are going to map. sounds you will need and interferometer based system with a rang finder.....depending on how much mapping you need. Look at the OCT system, they are currently being developed as mini 3D imagers inside arteries.

for just plain collision dtecetion, a range finger might work, but it is pretty directional....might need larde collimating optics to widen the beam
