Ultrasonic welding?

Has ultrasonic welding been developed for sheet metal applications? My initial research seems to indicate that it is used for plastics only.

If it has been developed for steel, can you provide a link for further information?

Solidica is a company that is using ultrasonic welding to join thin sheets of aluminum for use as molds for injection molding, etc. Not sure if they have a website...
