Hi,

UG-84(h)(3) Material Over 11/2 in. (38 mm) Thick. When procedure tests are made on material over 11/2 in. (38 mm) in thickness, three sets of impact specimens are required. Heat affected zone specimens shall be as described in(g)(2) above. Two sets of impact specimens shall be removed from the weld with one set located near [within 1/16 in. (1.5 mm)] the surface of one side of the material and one set taken as near as practical midway between the surface and the center of thickness of the opposite side as described in (g)(1) above.

First charpy set location is clear but the second set is not. "Center of thickness of the opposide side" what does it really mean? i really don't understand. A plate has only one center of thickness. We may talk about center of thickness on both sides on a Double V "X" weld deposits. But on a single V bevel?

Maybe the code is trying to say 1/4t from the other surface?

So, my questions are;
a) where to extract the specimen on a double V bevel Production Test Plate?
b) where to extract the specimen on a V bevel Production Test Plate?

waiting for your kind contributions and clarifications.

Thanks in advance,

Have a look at Table UG-84.6. I believe they are trying to say the same locations for weld metal.

The table will answer your questions about double and single V groove welds.
