Typical steel gravity column base connection - embedment

I am referring to the area within the slab isolation joints around the column. Do we have to make sure the base plate is embedded in concrete when slab is being pured in the area? If yes, how is this achieved in the field? What is the problem in having the base plate embedded in about 6 in thick soil and pour concrete on top of it? Does this cause corrosion issues? Please clarify. Thanks

Yes, this can cause corrosion. The degree of required protection depends on the environment the column bases will live in. Typical means of protection are galvanizing, concrete around the base, asphaltic coatings.
