Type 1 joints - ASME VIII Div. 1

Can a single sided, V-groove butt joint without backing be considered a type 1 weld as per ASME VIII Div. 1 UW-12? This weld would have a GMAW root and SAW fill and cap.

Yes, but only if the backside of the weld can be visually eaxmined to verify Code compliance for undercut, weld profile and reinforcement.
