A design is being used that utilizes a two cylinder gas engine (24 hp). It is being suggested to direct couple this to a rotor seeing high dynamic loading. Testing of direct couplers has not produced very good results. Also, manufacturers seem to be turned off as soon as they hear it is for a two cylinder engine. Besides going to a sheave and belt system, what else may be an option?

Centrifugal clutch or possibly a hydraulic coupling ?
