Tray Rings for Pressure Vessels

Does the ASME Code mention anything about what Material can and can not be used to make Tray Rings for Pressure Vessels. We use Rolled Flat Bar to make our Tray Rings. Someone has mentioned that they have to be made out of plate. Thanks...

Presuming you are referring to ASME VIII Div. 1, you'll find your answer in UG-4(b): Material for nonpressure parts, such as skirts, supports, baffles, lugs, clips, and extended heat transfer surfaces, need not conform to the specifications for the material to which they are attached or to a material specification permitted in this Division, but if attached to the vessel by welding shall be of weldable quality...

Division 1 doesn't care what you make the rings out of provided you can prove that they can be reliably welded. What you're probably hearing is a client spec which is more restrictive on material selection. Using an ASTM or ASME material will probably reduce any questions regarding "weldability". Otherwise you might be pushed into qualifiying the weld procedures etc.
