You need help mounting a device to a tripod? Not exactly the level of student question we're expecting around here...

Nirrad,

Camera tripods have 1/4[‑]20[ ]threads. UNC seems to work, but actually, they are supposed to be 1/4[‑]20BSW.

Any surveying tripod I have ever seen is 5/8[‑]11UNC. This is no where near 33mm.

A metric thread would be something like M33[×]1 or M33[×]0.7, with the second number being the thread pitch.

Thank you drawoh.
I will make something up to get me underway.
I understand it to be somewhat odd but the optical plumb to the datum is viewed through the connecting screw.
Things are laser guided on the new equipment. However,as a newcomer to a very old subject I would like to understand fully the basics of theodolite operation.

That's to ensure that you are directly over the monument whose datum you are planning on using. However, there are lots of other measurements for which aligning to the ground datum isn't necessary. We've used theodolites for decades, but only indoors and only for relative measurements, so we've never used anything related to datum plumb, only the autoleveling.
