I've got an interior load-bearing wall that will have TJI joists bearing on it from both sides. One side has 9 1/2" deep joists, the other has 16" deep joists, and the tops must be at the same elevation. How should this be detailed? Would the 9 1/2" joists have blocking beneath them to get their tops at the same elevation as the 16" joists? Is this ever done, or should I just use the (more expensive) 16" joists on both sides (or make them all continuous 16" joists)?

Thanks.

I doubt you are saving much by changing sizes. You may be able to go down in size if you make them cont. as long as the interior wall can take the additional load.

If you use continuity over the wall, you might get away with 14" deep joists on both sides.

A couple of ideas, including yours I think.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

KootK, I like detail 1 better than my idea (detail 2) actually. Thank you!

You're welcome. Maybe one more for the hanger adverse. They're out there.
