Other than the way the V-22 does it using a screw/ball jack (hydraulically controlled) does anybody know of a different way to tilt the nacelles of a tiltrotor a/c????

Also: Anyone up on drive shafts? I need to design a way of driving the tiltrotors proprotors on one engine? Is axis gearboxes and interconnect shafting the only way???

Any help you can give me would be gratefully received - Am getting frustrated at the lack of information out there!

Thanks again

Regarding driveshafts, this may help:

You could talk to GKN Spicer, or Dana (suppliers to auto industry) for existing products.

Regarding nacelles, not sure. I quite like the idea of using either cyclic pitch or a trimmed stator/wing, so that the airflow itself controls the nacelle angle. Would need some work on dynamics.

The Nord 500 used that method with twin ducted fans. Using aerodynamic control of the nacells seemed to be to slow to be effective, however this could have been more to do with the ducts than the control mechanism.
Im fairly sure that the V22 uses a hydraulic cross drive, and not a direct shaft. Off memory its pressurised to about 5000psi. One of the concerns of V22 critics is that to save weight, the hyd lines are very thin walled titanium, and at the pressures being run, one shot could bring down the aircraft.
What dont you like about the srew jack system? seems to work OK. I think it can rotate upto around 5deg/sec.
What size aircraft are you working on?

How are you Mart?

"How are you Mart?"

I'm now an expert in fluid dynamics and the Navier-Stokes equation (apparently) ;-) . Exam was hard timewise, but I'm now enjoying reading up on high speed aero and gas turbine notes. Funny how all this stuff makes more sense second time round.

How's your project? Sorry I went offline a while, just never got around to reconnecting. In the end, I decided that I would be too distracted from revision - believe me there was enough of that! I'm fully broadband compliant now, and ready for non-commerce ;-)

Got about 20 irons in the fire at the moment. :)
When you get a chance drop me your new email to my adress. Your not allowed to post email adresses on the forum, got a kick from the mod for that.
Drop me a line, so we dont send this to far OT.

Same as before. It's the same account, but all the old emails are still on the old computer disk. Since I haven't checked whether this as affected by the lightning strike, I actually can't get to your old emails!
