Hello,
I am doing a replacement of existing item (heat exchanger AES type) and I have seen there is a number of tie rods lower than minimum required by TEMA for tube bundle.
Which problem could we have if we don't respect minimum TEMA for tie rods? (we don't have to do thermal design)
This is only a replacement of existing one but with TEMA in the new construction.

Matrix_93, problems could arise in proper retention / location of the baffles. However, if the existing design gave no trouble in service, if it is not feasible to meet TEMA and if client approves, you could duplicate it.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Try to avoid problems. I suggest the new design.

Or you could just kill yourself :)

That was intended to to be humorous, it probably wasn't. Apologies.

Matrix_93, what you need is three tie rods in each baffle segment. This positively locates them. Seal bars, dummy tubes and so forth can serve the purpose as well. TEMA also allows fewer, larger tie rods than tabulated. Note use of the word "suggested".

If the existing design performed adequately, a duplicate should as well.

Mike

Tie rods are very important to avoid possible damage during tube bundle removal and handling.

TEMA may be a contractual requirement, but it is not a jurisdictional requirement. TEMA requirements can be waived with approval of your customer.

If the current design has proven to be successful, and the customer has not had any issues with the design in the past, then it may be appropriate the copy the old tie-rod design.

If the current design has given the customer problems over the years, then this might be the cause, and a redesigned tube layout to meet TEMA requirements may be appropriate.

Talk to your customer...

Why the replacement?
