This is a question for pipeline enginers in offshore field.
Is there any guideline or reference code which tells the frequency of pigging a pipeline used(for transportation of well fluid/crude oil) for descaling purpose.
What is international practice followed by operators to pig the pipelines connected with SPM calm buoys.

Pipeline pigging program is an outcome of the corrosion study and material selection study. The pipeline design should recommed the pigging interval after the initial baseline pigging.

As for, operational and descaling pigging, the frequency depends on the commodity. The initial pigging runs provides information on the scale build up, depending on which a regular interval can be determinded.

As an example, Sarawak Shell Malaysia performs [IBC conference notes]:
12, 16 & 18 inch Belingian oil : 1 in 3 months.
8 , 12 & 18 inch Samarang oil : 1 in 2 weeks.
30, 32 & 36 inch Laconia oil : 1 in 6 months.
