Maybe they should consult with Santa Cruz Metro before taking on such a foolish endeavor.
It's in operation... maybe Santa Cruz Metro should consult with them? The US seems to have problems with high speed trains, too.

If that's what you want, maybe Europe and Japan should bomb our railroads into oblivion and then pay us to rebuild them like we did for them.

You must have provided a lot of help to China... they are leading the pack with about 40,000 miles of it.

Why are you so obsessed with pointing out every single thing in which China has more than everyone else?

Except for emissions from coal plants where you keep just ignoring the conversation completely even though they are in 1st place?

They are putting the rest of the world to shame in nearly everything.

On a per capita basis, their carbon footprint is about 1.5 less than the US (the US is #1 for countries greater than 100M population) and China is manufacturing nearly everything. The US has a higher per capita footprint and they produce nearly nothing. The recent Texas flooding is a consequence.

If human caused climate change is global why would the flooding be concentrated in Texas?

Keeping a significant portion of their population in squalor would probably be a significant factor in the per capita statistics that you love so much to bring up at any moment China gets criticized.

Aside from the homeless and some fringe groups that chose to live off the grid the US is 100% industrialized. China is not.

Yup, in human rights violations, patent/copyright/IP theft and infringement, toxic pollutants and chemical dumps, mass deforestation, and on and on.

But hey, the trains run on time, and they're really fast, right?

I feel no shame in being bested by cheaters, thieves, and communists that have total control over their population and can cut through the red tape by cutting through its own population to make these massive construction projects happen.

Welding people into their own homes during Covid? It helped them achieve the numbers you boasted about. Any means to justify the ends, right?

Did China really weld people into their own homes? That's what you can do when the state has totalitarian control over it's citizens.... And, the citizens don't have a right to bear arms.

FWIW, I really don't believe that we should be calling China a communist county any more. Their economic is largely capitalistic.... It's just that they have a totalitarian government that can jump in at any point and arrest any citizens (or business owners) that are not sufficiently loyal to the government. That sounds a lot closer to fascism to me.

Don't get me wrong, both systems (Fascisms and Communism) are tremendously evil and oppressive. But, I think the economic success of China and Vietnam over the last 30 or so years is likely due to the embracing capitalism in the marketplace.

I should point out that my parents used to travel to China ever few years when I was younger. My Dad was deeply involved in the "international association of energy economics". He actually founded the association in 1977. Much of the next 5 to 10 years was spent going to other countries and meeting with their energy economist in order to expand the organization.

I remember going through a slideshow of his photos after my Dad died a couple of years ago.... Lots of pictures of their travels to China over the years. You could see a HUGE cultural change during that time. The first trip (circa 1980) was like looking at a dystopian science fiction film. Everyone wore "Mao Jackets" like it was the only type of clothing that was allowed.... Likely because it was the only thing the Communist party approved of and produced.

By the late 80's (under Deng Xaoping?) it had totally changed. It reminded me of when my Dad did the slide show for us years before..... And, he was commenting on how INSANELY different China was from just a few years before. The fashion changes alone were an indication of a society that was finally embracing the free market. People were free to buy whatever clothes worked best for them. Different jobs, climates, body types, and personal preferences all required different apparel. Which was just not possible under the communism.

I would suggest that China is far more industrialised than the US is. For profit, most companies took jobs from the US and moved them east.

You might want to look in a mirror... for its treatment of Covid and the recent Texas flood... the US may be in line for the new Darwin Award.

It's a Chinese form of socialism... and is working very well.

In the last 75 years they have gone from one of the poorest countries in the world to one of the top. Their retirement age is "China's current retirement age is 60 for men, 55 for women in white-collar jobs, and 50 for working-class women." Does the US even have a retirement plan? Their life expectancy exceeds that of the US and is climbing, not reducing; the US infant mortality rate is higher than Cuba's. Their per capita income has increased several times in the last 40 years, while the US has declined or remained stagnant. I don't see photos of homeless or 'tent' cities... Nearly free healthcare and free education. What's not to like.

Dik, have you calculated your own carbon footprint?
Nope... but other than our cold climate issues, it's likely very small. I don't drive and whenever I go out, I usually use public transit. I don't run an air conditioner. I usually eat veggies and almost no beef... chicken and fish, mostly.

You're a concrete engineer... You left that out of your footprint.

Everything else you listed are assumptions. Maybe you should put some effort into investigating?
