thickness tolerance of piping Vs plates

Dear All,

I have a following question:
The seamless pipe thickness tolerance form mill production is 12.5%
The under tolerance of welded piping is 0.01".

Could you tell me please if there are such tolerances for plates - plates that are rolled within manufacturer factory.
I want a plate with nominal thickness (another questions is if nominals are applicable to plates much the same way NPS are for piping) and once i get the plate what deviation (tolerance) it may have under whatever standard ?

Thank you

Have you talked with a structural PE ?... Have you reviewed ASTM/ASME standards on thincknesses and tolerances ?

The tolerance would be referred to or contained within the ASTM document, in my experience ,,,

Thickness tolerances for ASTM steel plates are specified in ASTM A36 and ASTM A480. These tolerances vary based on the plate's thickness and width. The general rule is that tolerances are tighter for thinner plates and wider plates. Thickness measurements should be taken at least 3/8 inch (9.52 mm) but not more than 3 inches (76.2 mm) from the longitudinal edge.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
ASTM A36 (Carbon Steel Plate):
  • Thickness Tolerance: The permitted variation under specified thickness is 0.01 inch (0.25 mm).

  • Thickness Measurement: Measurements are taken at 3/8 to 3/4 inch from the longitudinal edge.

  • Other Measurement Locations: For measurements taken elsewhere, the permitted variation over specified thickness shall be 1 3/4 times the amount in the table, rounded to the nearest 0.01 inch.

  • Specific Tolerances: For instance, a plate with a nominal thickness of 0.500 inches would have a tolerance range of 0.490 to 0.510 inches.

  • Example: A plate with a thickness of 1.0 inches and a width of 84 inches or less might have a +0.070 / -0.010 inch tolerance.
ASTM A480 (Stainless Steel Plate):
  • Thickness Tolerance: The minus tolerance is typically 0.010 inch (0.25 mm) for all thicknesses.

  • Plus Tolerance: The plus tolerance varies based on thickness and width.

  • Example: A plate with a thickness of 0.375 inches and a width less than or equal to 84 inches might have a +0.055 / -0.010 inch tolerance.

  • Thickness Measurement: Similar to A36, measurements are taken at least 3/8 inch (9.52 mm) but not more than 3 inches (76.2 mm) from the longitudinal edge.
General Considerations:
  • Width and Thickness:
Tolerances are generally tighter for thinner and wider plates.

  • Measurement Location:
Measurements taken away from the specified location (3/8 to 3 inches from the edge) may have different tolerances, according to some ASTM standards.

  • Specific Tables:
ASTM standards provide detailed tables outlining the specific tolerances for different thickness and width ranges.

  • Flatness:
In addition to thickness tolerances, ASTM standards also specify flatness tolerances
