Hi all,

When designing pressure vessel, which stresses are the most important to look at: shear stress, outer circumferential stress, inner circumferential stress, outer radial stress or inner radial stress. Or should I just look at the maximum value.

I’m designing external pressure of about 7000psi, aluminum. My calculation come out to be:

shear stress=17187psi;
circ. Stress(outer)=27375psi;
circ. Stress(inner)=34375psi.

Any recommendation on book regarding pressure vessel design?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

The stress is whichever ones are given in the ASME B&PV Code formulas. Generally, you don't have a choice for standard geometries, you use the equation they give with the allowable stress they give. (In this particular case, it would be hoop stress at the inside and average longitudinal stress, I believe.)
