I have stained glass that has cracks due to thermal stress from a recent church fire. Any suggestions as to how to check the level of thermal stress in the glass that did not crack but is in close proximity to those that did; and are there any ways to relieve the stress by controlled heating and cooling?

Whether it will work or not on your stained glass we used a polarized filter to check for strains in fabricated labware. All glassblowing shops will have a filter.

Are you going to rebuild the window or are the lead canes ok? If you have to rebuild the panel you maybe be able to anneal the reaming glass without loss of tint.

If you have a university that has a glassblowing shop you could carry some of the cracked glass and see what it looks like.
