I have a client who needs to test 17km (10.6 miles) of coiled 6" pipe at 1.25xMAWP = 4500 psi (310 bar). I am concerned with the safety of doing only a pneumatic test (with He tracer to detect microscopic leaks). The usual TNT calcs don't really apply in this case since it is small diameter pipe & not a vessel. I have received lots of conflicting opinions but nothing concrete. We have discussed hydrotesting first but they aren't too keen on this idea due to the extra time & cost. Any suggestions, calcs or code references are appreciated.
