Terminology question - difference between a platform and a terrace? 1

In earthworks, what is the difference between the two? Certainly not my type of work I'm just working on a report at the moment.

Terraces typically refer to hillsides or existing embankments. The hillside will be terraced as described.

A platform is a level surface on which people or things can stand. The terrace may have platforms.

I agree somewhat with bimr, but with a difference. When a hillside or an embankment is terraced, each flattened area is a terrace, and can also be called a platform. It is probably more common to call the first level area a platform, then the subsequent steps terraces.
