How do I get the surface area of a part to appear in a column in the parts list?

I can see how to put the mass into a column, but surface area is not available despite being calculated in the part.

I have tried setting a sensor, but these don't appear to be made available in the custom properties like I would have expected.

There is no way to do this currently. I would submit an enhancement request.

For some pleasure reading, try FAQ731-376

You could do it manually if you really need it, but the value will not update when the model changes, which is not really a good thing.
Create a custom property called "Surface Area" in the model file and give it the value calculated by SE.
You can then add this column to the parts list.
