We are working on a project require treating wastewater. Important treatment step is to convert Sulfite to Sulfate be means of Oxidation tower or aeration basins. Do any one have the basis for sizing of the equipment required for this system. please refer to attached file for input if needed.

Air blowers, aeration tank are the main components

Thanks

Was involved with a tannery some time ago. Sodium sulfite is used to remove hair from animal hides in the tanning industry.

The activated sludge process has an almost infinite capacity for converting sulfite to sulfate. The amount of sulfite in the activated sludge basin was so low that it could not be measured.

The biggest issues are usually with mixing and preventing 'dead zones'.
This is common waste water treatment stuff.

Is the basis of design same as regular Activated Sludge Process (ASP)?
In ASP thumb rule is to consider approx. 80 Nm3 in 28.32 m³, or about 2.8 Nm3 of air per hour of air per cubic meter of reactor

Idea is to apply coarse air diffusers to employ through out the Aeration basin, to avoid "dead zones"
Whats shall be the retention time to convert Sulfite to Sulfate and area required and air flow basis

The basis of design would be the same as the activated sludge. The pH is typically above 8 units. The normal mixing energy for activated sludge systems should be adequate.
