hi all experts,

i am reading the following thread. and IdanPV quoted Hinnant's elaboration on what suffices to account for local notch effect.
Account for the Local Notch or Effect of the Weld - ASME Code Fatigue Analysis
In an FEA model, notch effect of the weld can only be accounted for if there is no singularity. In this case, the FSRF is 1.0 and the peak
alternating stress is taken directly from the FEA solution.--Chris Hinnant.
please allow me to nitpick his wording. i think only "no singularity" is not sufficient to allow for 1.0 of FSRF. surface condition of weld and weld quality (NDE) is also involved in the determination of FSRF. is my understanding correct?
Please comment.

Thanks in advance.

I suggest you to read this LinkedIn post, especially Mr. Seipp (AKA TGS 4) comments regarding the application of the FSRF.

I don't think that the use of FSRF=1.0 is applicable in FEA, and FSRF shall be use or, as an alternative, using the Equivalent Structural Stress method.

IdanPV, thank for your post.

Check out Table 5.11 in the 2025 Edition of VIII-2. It clarifies when and when not to use a FSRF, as opposed to using a SCF (or both). If used, then a FSRF needs to come from 5.12 and 5.13. Or use the newly-renamed Fatigue Method C (Structural Stress Method for Fatigue of Weldments).
