Hello All,
Background: Released a bill of materials to purchasing to get ahold of all the long lead items for a project about 6 weeks ago. Included was a 40' lenght of NPS 48 API 5L Gr. B ERW SCH XS (0.50" WT) pipe. Piping design code is B31.3 Normal Fluid Service.
The Fumble: Purchasing decided (in a vaccum) that this was a commodoty stock item and they would order it when needed instead of when the bill was realeased.
THE FIREY INFERNO: No one has a peice of the pipe listed on the bill in stock and now I have to determine if the piece they want to substitue is acceptable.
The proposed substitution is API 5L DSAW (0.587" wall). I am still trying to an answer on the grade ( I am very suspicios this may be a high allow pipe left over from a pipeline job as the wall thickness is rather odd).
My real question is can I substitue DSAW for ERW pipe?
B31.3 table A-1B lists an Ej factor of 0.85 for ERW and 0.95 for EFW, double butt, straight or spiral seam. The nomenclature between B31.3 and API 5L are not quite the same and I am somewhat confused on the matter. It looks like DSAW falls into EFW and the Ej factor should be 0.95, however I am not positive and will not allow the substitution ontil I am sure of its acceptability.
The pipe will be joined to A53 Gr. B branch connections and an A105 Flange and an A234 WCB Cap
Any guidence from an experienced hand would be greatly appreciated.
A question properly stated is a problem half solved.
Always remember, free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it!
