Consider analyzing the impact of low-cost equipment in the overall O&M cost of the distribution system. Fuses might require longer outage and increase the operational cost while reducing system availability and potential penalties.

Power utilities are ranked based on performance indicator index such as CAIDI = SAIDI/SAIFI representing the total duration of sustained interruptions in a year/total number of interruptions. Also, utility and investor paid attention to the Momentary Average Interruption Frequency Index (MAIFI).

I agree. However in an underground system replacing the occasional fuse for a feeder fault would actually cost less in the long run.


I'm roughly running the numbers and the cost savings for such a substation appear substantial at first glance.
